The Holy Spirit–my Ultimate Superhero

Last week, I wrote about the “supervillain” voices that wage war in my head. I’ve learned that exposing these negative voices is an important step in overcoming them. But the best part is, I’m not in this fight alone. Thank God, the Holy Spirit, my Ultimate Superhero, is in the ring with me, speaking truth. 

The Holy Spirit is my Superman. He uses the truth of Jesus to disempower these villains that try to hijack my life. Here is how He works:

Spiral-man – the anxious swirl-monster

Spiral-man is anxious, driven by self-doubt, and addicted to perfectionism. 

First, the Holy Spirit applies Spiral-man’s kryptonite: Pause.

Then, the Holy Spirit counter-attacks:

“Jesus has christened you with His perfection. His purposes are secure. You are stamped with his righteousness. You are free to fail! And you have the wherewithal to handle failure when it happens. You are called to learn, experiment, and grow, all of which necessitate failures along the way.”

Level up!: IN JESUS I am eclectic, creative, and wild.

The White Knuckle – the brutal competitor

The White Knuckle is intense, super-competitive, and compelled by the need to be acknowledged and respected.

The White Knuckle’s kryptonite? Take a deep breath.

Holy-Spirit-counter-attack:

“Jesus rent the heavens to embrace you just the way you are. He respects you enough to give you thousands of choices every day. You are enough to move his heart to glorious acts of love. You are worthy of love and belonging just the way you are. His attention is on you.”

Level up!: IN JESUS I am peaceful, organic, and rested.

Shucksy – the pitiful slime-slinger

Shucksy is self-pitiful, sad, and alone.

His Kryptonite: Chin up!

For him, the Holy Spirit’s counter-attack with this:

“Your hope is in Jesus, and he will not disappoint! Therefore, dare to hope for your life. Jesus loves when you dare greatly; the disappointment of others is irrelevant. You are free to fail! Set goals as guesses, and leap for them. Jesus will always bring you good friends along the way, and he will always be your best friend.”

Level up!: IN JESUS I am flashy, strong, big, royal, and bold.

The Gnaw – emissary of the void

The Gnaw believes there is never enough… he feeds on joy and spews dread.

His Kryptonite: Enjoy something.

To beat him back, the Holy Spirit says:

“Jesus gives LAVISHLY and abundantly. Your future is secure and spectacular in him forever. You cannot ultimately fail, because he has roped you into his ultimate victory! You are free. Your future ends beautifully. Never again shall you be alone, he will be with you.”

Level up!: IN JESUS I am joyful, risky, relaxed, and faith-y.

My Ultimate Superhero

The battles don’t always go as planned. Sometimes I feel downright downtrodden.

But! I’m grateful – The Holy Spirit is always with me. And He. Never. Fails.

But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. 1 John 4:4 NLT

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NLT
