When we dive into God’s presence, we can resettle from the outward storms of life. Here’s what i mean:
When Andrew and I visited Hawaii a few years ago, we spent a magical day snorkeling off the coast of Molokini, a crescent shaped isle near Maui. It was a beautiful day. We sailed out to the island on a huge catamaran, spotting whales and dolphins along the way. After anchoring offshore, we donned our gear and plunged in the clear cool water. As we swam, we saw colorful coral and gently waving seaweed, and scores of fish I couldn’t begin to name. We even spied a couple of sea turtles.
There is such a contrast between the sights and sounds on top of the ocean and those down below. Above, sea gulls cry, and the surf crashes. The blue-green ocean glistens with a light that is almost blinding. The sun warms your skin. The breeze ruffles your hair, and the ever-present flavor of salt lingers on your taste-buds. However, beneath the surface, everything changes. The sounds are muffled, and deeper. The light is dimmer, and the colors more vivid. Schools of small bright fish dart here and there. Larger ones meander along the ocean floor, threading their way through the plants gracefully swaying in the current.
On the outside, life can seem overwhelming, but that need not affect our inward life. On the surface of our lives, we can be bombarded with activity and uncertainty, fatigue and anxiety. But, when we dip beneath the surface and enter God’s presence, all that changes. The pace slows. Our focus shifts, and our heart quiets. We sense God’s love, and experience His peace. We regain perspective. I am God’s precious child. He is working all things to good for me. He has everything in hand. I can trust Him to guide me and take care of me. There is nothing to fear.
When we emerge, our hearts are settled. Renewed. At peace.
Every morning take time for a swim. Dive deep, and let God’s love renew and restore your heart and mind and spirit. If anxiety starts to surge, and your peace seems to vanish, take a breath. Dip your head beneath the surface and be refreshed. God is still with you. Loving. Leading. Protecting. Reassuring.
There is nothing to fear. God is right here. He isn’t going anywhere.
