My dad has been gone for 18 years now, it’s amazing how much I still think about him. And miss him. He wasn’t perfect (who is?) but he had a lot of wonderful qualities. He possessed a deep faith, a strong work ethic, and a generous nature. And he loved to laugh. He was one of those “never met a stranger people.” He could – and usually did–strike up a conversation with just about anyone. When I was a teenager, I used to dread going out to dinner with him. I knew by the time supper was finished, we not only be on a first name basis with the waiter, but we would know his or her life history. At the time I was mortified by Dad’s extreme friendliness. Now, looking back, it just makes me smile.
Dad was also thoughtful, in quirky sort of ways. For example, when I was in college, every week he would write me a “postcard” (just a plain 3×5 card). Since I lived far from home, I looked forward to those cards in my mailbox. I used to tease him that his little notes were like getting a long letter, because his handwriting was so bad it would take me forever to decipher it. I came across one of these missives recently. See how long it takes you to figure out what it says! (My translation, which may not be right, is at the end of this post!)
I don’t remember that Dad’s words were terribly profound. Just a little slice of life. But the message they delivered went beyond the written text. They said “I love you. You are in my thoughts, and I am praying for you.”
Our heavenly Father’s message to us
Our heavenly Father, who loves us more than we can imagine, has a special message for us each day as well. As we read the Bible, His Spirit can highlight a word, or phrase, giving us fresh insight or a encouragement. But the deeper enduring message is this: “I love you. You are in my thoughts. I am with you always.”
Take the time this week to listen for that still small voice. Write down any special message or insight you perceive. And share with us what you are learning. We would love to hear from you!
PS Here’s what I think Dad’s card said:
Dear Lydia, Beautiful day today after much rain. We all well. Janie Wise visited us last night after attending Memorial Services at Tallulah Falls just for those killed in the flood. Had a long full day helping a person in serious court cases. Love, Dad
