We all have competing voices in our heads, thoughts that advise us about what to do and think, and help interpret what is going on around us. There are really two opposing voices: one is Satan’s. He is the master of lies. He would like nothing better than to deceive us–to get us to believe a lie, and then act on it. The other voice belongs to God, through His Holy Spirit. He wants us to know and believe the truth about who He is, who we are, and what is really going on in the world.
So which voice will win out? Here is a great story that will help answer that question:
An elderly Cherokee Native American was teaching his grandchild about life. He used this illustration:
“A fight is going on inside me, it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, competition, superiority, and ego. The other is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too.”
The child thought about it for a minute, and then asked: “Which wolf will win, Grandfather?”
“The one you feed.” The grandfather replied.
We have a choice
When Satan whispers a lie to us, we have a choice.
- We can keep thinking about it, allowing the lie to fester and cause more and more destruction.
- We can kick it (and him) out of our head. And focus and think about what is true.
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:7-8
“Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
And when our minds are filled with truth, is it easier to spot the lies.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Phil. 4:8 NLT
You have a choice about what you think about, what you choose to believe.
What you feed is what will grow.
What have you been thinking about–maybe even obsessing over—lately? What are you feeding?
