Our small group just started a study on Revelations, which is not my favorite, but I was trying to keep an open mind when reading the first few chapters. Hmmm. Not so bad. In fact, a lot of good stuff so far. One verse that stuck out to me was Rev. 3:8:
I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. Rev 3:8
Shut doors
I have had a lot of shut doors in my life recently. You probably have too. For example, after frantically gearing up for a COVID 19 surge, I have been cooling my heels at home, furloughed from work for the last 6 weeks. In addition, I haven’t been able to travel. Or go out to eat. Or go anywhere, really, but the grocery store. I haven’t been able to get together with friends. Or see anyone’s faces, except on Zoom. I didn’t get to watch Samuel, our youngest, cross the stage and receive his diploma from med school, or to host a big party in his honor. (Yes, he graduated!!!)
Doors no one can shut
While I’ve been acutely aware of doors that have been closed to me, I haven’t spent much time focusing on what doors God has opened. And it never crossed my mind to think about what doors God has opened that no one can shut. Here are a few of those unshuttable doors that came to mind: He has opened the door to me to eternal life, an intimate ongoing relationship with Him. He has released the unstoppable flood of His amazing love, which He pours out on me and each of us. I have been given the irrevocable opportunity to be myself, the person God made and loves. To celebrate my uniqueness, the specific collection of gifts, talents, personality, experiences that makes me. I have an ongoing invitation from God to enjoy the fruit of the spirit. To learn and grow. To create. And to enjoy the relationships and connections I have in new ways. And I have an open door to love others in my own unique way.
Those are a few of the wide-open doors before me. What kinds of doors has God placed into your life that no one can shut?
